The Swiss grid was born during this time to create order and emphasis. Many of the Swiss International Typographic Style posters include this playful feature. Designers provoked the spatial relationship between positive and negative spaces. Space was a key component in Mid-Century design.Towards the 1950s and 1960s, the colors became even more vibrant. It later evolved to saturated and playful with the works of Josef Albers. It started as desaturated and monochromatic with the work of Piet Mondrian. Color palettes vary from decade to decade.

The style was also a rejection of the characteristics of the previous Victorian style: a highly ornate and overdecorated aesthetic. A new era of advertising arose due to the evolution of printing technology and the mass production of posters and billboards. Multiple historical and social events led to the Mid-Century movement. This was enhanced by the opening of the New Bauhaus School of Design in Chicago in the early 1940s and the popular Swiss International Typographic Style in the 1950s. This particular style stems from the design period starting from the 1930s all through to the mid-1960s. Want to learn more about how Adobe Illustrator works? Check out my Illustrator Explainer Series - a comprehensive collection of over 100 videos where I go over every tool, feature and function and explain what it is, how it works, and why it's useful. I’m afraid Yellowtail has fallen into the same category as Permanent Marker and Pacifico - an otherwise nice looking font that is now associated with poor quality design due to how accessible it is to amateurs.

It’s another decent-looking font whose free access led to it being overused and associated with low standards. I guess this font is okay to use in contexts where you need to depict writing on a white board, but outside of that, I don’t see much of a use. It’s a shame - it’s actually a really nice font. The first thing that comes to mind when I see Pacifico is all of the freemium DIY logo and web design platforms that overwhelmingly use it, which are literal assembly lines for lousy design.

Pacifico is an otherwise nice font that has just been ruined from overuse due to its free and open license nature. I couldn’t wrap my head around why a business that sells cars to people who need reliable transportation would want to communicate grunge and wear & tear. I actually saw a used car dealership that had a banner with this font plastered on it hanging in front of their building the other day. It’s a font that communicates industrial, grunge, wear and tear, etc., but I’ve seen it used in many different contexts than that. What makes Capture It a dysfunctional font is partly its loud, distinguished, charismatic style (much like Bleeding Cowboys,) as well as how overused it is, and how improperly used it is.
